Year of Creative Scotland 2010 Scottish Borders Textile Industry

Scotland’s textile industry

The textile industry in Scotland

Nestled between Edinburgh and the north of England, the Scottish Borders is the perfect place to discover world-class textiles during the Year of Creative Scotland. The Scottish Borders’ fabric industry is world-famous and has been producing high-quality finished garments while also providing inspiration and raw materials for designers for centuries.

The region became renowned for its quality textiles as long ago as the 13th century, when Galashiels, an hour south of Edinburgh, began exporting wool to Flanders. Since then many textiles companies have been established in the Scottish Borders and several well-known designers began their careers here.
The prominence of the textile business is demonstrated by The School of Textiles and Design’s long and notable history. Part of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, the school provides excellent textiles education across many specialist areas.

Not only do the Scottish Borders have their own share of home-grown designers, several big names have used the exceptional skills of the Scottish Borders textile workers over the years, such as such as Vivienne Westwood, Chanel and Dior.

You can find out more about this fascinating industry at the Borders Textile Towerhouse in Hawick where you can follow the story of textiles from virgin wool to creations on the catwalk. The lovingly restored 16th century tower house features interactive hands-on exhibitions and exciting displays along with changing displays showcasing the best work from the Heriot-Watt School of Textiles and Design and creations by top Scottish Borders designers.

Take home beautiful garments from some of the region’s finest manufacturers, such as luxury cashmere and Merino wool products from Hawick Cashmere who have been producing high-quality clothing since 1874. Or take a trip to the town of Selkirk in the heart of the Scottish Borders and visit Lochcarron of Scotland to see some of their world-renowned textiles. The company has been weaving a wide range of fantastic fabric since 1947 and has an impressive list of clients including Ralph Lauren and Burberry. Star Wars actor Ewan McGregor even bought a kilt here!
