An Elegant Jewel of a Capital
Edinburgh really is a tale of two cities. There is the medieval Old Town, overlooked by the majesty of Edinburgh Castle. From the high crag on which the castle sits, the Royal Mile leads downhill to the royal Palace of Holyroodhouse. In between, lies a warren of atmospheric alleys and closes which resonate with legends and myths from the mists of time. The Royal Mile itself is jam-packed with time-honored kiltmakers, Scottish craft shops, antique stores and fudge kitchens – where friendly shopkeepers will be happy to let you sample the different flavors, pointing out that a couple of cubes of homemade whisky fudge will go just perfectly with the strong Italian coffee they serve.
Then there is the New Town – a Manhattan-style gridwork of pristine Georgian facades. Walking along these regal streets, you will find designer haven Harvey Nichols department store, as well as the affluent architecture of regal Charlotte Square.
Although home to the most famous arts festivals in the world, the Edinburgh International Festival, the city is in fact saturated in culture all year round.
Edinburgh's a city that enjoys dining out, taking in galleries, shows and concerts, drinking in the welcoming atmosphere. An inspiring space which has helped create such well-loved characters as Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter. One visit to Edinburgh and you’ll be smitten!
