A short voyage to the far reaches
Sitting almost at the edge of the earth, you will discover a magical, otherworldly quality on Scotland’s northernmost islands. Take the ferry from mainland Ullapool across The Minch to the vibrant harbor town of Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. When you get there, head to The Whaler’s Rest Pub, where you can listen in on fishermen’s intriguing tales. And then go on to discover the energy of more ancient stories at the Standing Stones of Callanais, or at St Clement’s medieval kirk on the neighboring Isle of Harris – and while you are there, why not get decked out in some of the island's renowned tweed?
Food from the Scottish Islands
North, across the brooding Pentland Firth, sit the archipelagos of Orkney and further off, Shetland, where the Norse heritage is still felt strongly today – especially if you choose to join the Shetlanders at their rousing winter fire festivals, the famous Up Helly Aa.
